Private cover commemorating the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s Second Ashram in India - "Sabarmati Ashram".

Sabarmati Ashram is situated on Ashram Road in Ahmedabad on western bank of Sabarmati. Sabarmati Ashram was the second ashram of Gandhiji on Indian Soil. After returning from south Africa on 9th January 1915, Gandhiji founded the first ashram in the bungalow of Jivanlal Desai, a barrister by profession and a friend of Gandhiji at Kochrab near Paldi, a village near Ahmedabad, on 25th May, 1915. The second Ashram was started on 17th June 1917 as Satyagraha Ashram, later renamed as Harijan Ashram, with a twofold purpose – One was to carry on the search for Truth, and the other was to create a non-violent group of Workers. Now, it is known as Sabarmati Ashram. It remained the home for Gandhiji and main centre of the Indian Freedom Struggle, till 11th March 1930, when he launched the Dandi march.

Today the Sabarmati Ashram serves as a movement of Gandhijis Struggle for freedom. In postal cachet, it is described as “Gandhi Ashram” instead of “Sabarmati Ashram”.

The Department of Posts did not commemorate the centenary of the Prime Ashram of Gandhiji by issuing a Commemorative Stamps of Special Cover but private commemorative covers and cards were made by philatelists to commemorate 100 years of Sabarmati Ashram.
