Special Cancellation on 'No Tobacco Day' at Patna - 31st May 2013

Bihar Postal Circle issued a special cancellation "No- Tobacco Day" on 31/05/2013 at Philatelic Bureau, Patna GPO. The cancellation consists of message of Gandhi ji to Tobacco addicts. Pictorial health warning which depicts burning cigarette and Skull etc.

Special Cover released to mark 125 years of CST Building, Mumbai - 27th May 2013

Central Railway in co-operation with India Post, Maharashtra and Goa circle, released a special cover on 125 years of CST building, formerly known as Victoria Terminus, on 27th May 2013. The cover was released by Col KC Mishra, VSM, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra, and W K Pradhan, Additional General Manager, Central Railway, at CST. CST building was designed by Frederick William Stevens with influences from Victorian Italian gothic revival architecture and traditional Mughal buildings, the station was built in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 50th birthday. Construction of this building was started in May 1878. Name of this station was changed from Victoria Terminus to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in March 1996. This building was also included in Unesco’s World Heritage Site list in 2004.

New Competition Class 'Modern Philately' included in Brasiliana - 2013

Organizing committee of BRASILIANA-2013 has announced inclusion of new class as 'Class 13 - Modern Philately (21st Century)' as one of the competition class. To encourage modern philatelists to exhibit their collections on Modern Philately and philatelic material issued in the 21st Century (Issued after 2001) this class has been created which complies with special regulations for (A) Traditional, (B) Postal History and (C) Postal Stationery. To qualify in this class the exhibit should contain philatelic material issued by the postal authorities in the 21st century. Commemorative Stamp on Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) - 24th May 2013

A commemorative stamp commemorating 25 years of SEBI released on 24th May 2013 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Silver Jubilee Celebration function of SEBI held at Mumbai. A book tracing the history of the Indian securities market titled 'Banyan Tree to e-Trading' was also launched. SEBI was set up by the government in 1988 to safeguard the interests of investors. It was vested with statutory powers after the SEBI Act was passed in Parliament in 1992.

A special cover was released on the occasion of 4th Annual Day of Competition Commission of India on 20th May 2013 at New Delhi by Shri P. Chidambaram, Hon’ble Minister of Finance. Aim and Vision of CCI is to promote and sustain an enabling competition culture through engagement and enforcement that would inspire businesses to be fair, competetive and innovative; enhance consumer welfare; and support economic growth. Competition Commission of India aims to establish a robust competetive environment through proactive engagement with all stakeholders, including consumers, industry, government and international jurisdictions, being a knowledge intensive organization with high competence levels and professionalism, transparency, resolve and wisdom in enforcement.

A special cover was released to mark Diamond Jubilee of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) on 17th May 2013 at New Delhi. IETE is India's leading recognized professional society devoted to the advancement of science, technology, electronics, telecommunication and information technology. Founded in 1953, it serves more than 69,000 members through 59 centers / sub centers primarily located in India (3 abroad). The Institution provides leadership in scientific and technical areas of direct importance to the national development and economy. Government of India has recognised IETE as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) and also notified as an educational Institution of national eminence. The objectives of IETE focus on advancing electro-technology. The IETE conducts and sponsors technical meetings, conferences, symposia, and exhibitions all over India, publishes technical journals and provides continuing education as well as career advancement opportunities to its members.

Special Cover on Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) - 15th May 2013.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) has been established under The Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Act, 1999, an act of the J&K State Legislature (ACT No. XII of 1999 dated 12th May 1999) as an autonomous, highly technical & fully residential university. The University started functioning as an academic unit in Aug 2004 when it was inaugurated on 19th August 2004 at the hands of the then Hon'ble President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. The academic pattern, syllabi and evaluation procedure has been adopted from Indian Institutes of Technology. The University has signed Memorandum of Understanding with various national and international academic, professional and research institutes as well as industry to augment the learning process and to develop research activities.

Special Cover on 100 Years of Itarsi - Betul Section – 13th May 2013.

The Itarsi-Betul section in the Nagpur division of Central Railway completed Glorius 100 years on 13.05.2013. The 108 km. rail route, a vital link connecting the north with the south via Nagpur, was opened on 13 May, 1913. Laying the rail route crisscrossing the entire Satpuda Valley was a major challenge back then. But engineers of erstwhile Great Indian Peninsula Railways (now Central Railway) achieved it by constructing nine tunnels and over 300 bridges in the valley.

Special Cover on 4th Convocation Ceremony of G.S.V.M. Medical College, Kanpur - 10th May 2013.

G.S.V.M. Medical College ,Kanpur, known for its academic excellence world over, is named after Late Shri Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, a great freedom fighter, who lost his life at the altar of the communal frenzy in Kanpur in March 1931. This was the first medical college of U.P. established in independent India, forming a landmark in the annals of medical education in the state of U.P. It is one of the five medical colleges in India established under the second five year plan. This college came into existence in November 1955 and its foundation stone was laid down by Hon'ble Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on April 24, 1956.

On the occasion of 4th Convocation Ceremony of the college a special cover was issued at Kanpur on 10th May 2013. Hon'ble President Pranab Mukherjee was the Chief Guest of Convocation Ceremony.

Commemorative Stamp on Wild Ass of Kutch & Ladakh - 10th May 2013

Department of Posts, India released a set of two stamps on Kiang of Ladakh and Ghor Khar of Kutch on 10th May, 2013. A formal function for release was organized in Srinagar GPO where Stamp and First Day Cover on Kiang of Ladakh was released by Shri John Samuel, Chief Postmaster General, J&K in presence of Shri Vinod Ranjan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, J&K who was Chief Guest on the occasion.A mini Philatelic Exhibition was also held as part of the program.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri John Samuel said that this stamp on Kiang of Ladakh will generate wider interest on wildlife in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that Kiang or Tibetan Wild Ass is the largest of all the African and Asiatic wild asses. Its coat is reddish in summer to dark brown in winter with almost white underparts. Kiang is considered closer to a horse than ass due to its short ears, large tail tuft and broad hooves. Like all wild asses, Kiangs have short upright mane and a dark stripe along the back extending from nape to tail. The habitat of the Kiang extends from Tibet, some regions in China to east Ladakh and north Sikkim in India. Kiang is an agile animal and can run long ditstances at a speed of more than 50 kms per hour, Kiangs live in herds and feed upon sparsely growing sturdy grasses.

Special Cover and Customised My Stamp on 'Red Cross' - 8th May 2013

World Red Cross Day-2013 was observed at Srinagar on 8th May 2013 by The Indian Red Cross Society, J&K State Branch. A function was organsied to celebrate the event and Mr. John Samuel, the Chief Post Master General, J&K Circle was the chief guest on the occasion.

The World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of founder Sir Henry Dunant and to remember his contributions towards humanity and to pay homage to him. The Day is being observed every year on different themes and this year’s theme is '150 years of Humanitarian Action' (1863-2013). On the occasion, the Department of Posts, organised a Philatelic exhibition. Special Cover and My Stamp on Red Cross to mark this occasion. The cost of the cover is Rs. 10 and the funds raised from the sale of this would be contributed to Red Cross.

Special Cover released to mark 25 years of Excellence of Appejay School, Saket, New Delhi - 8th May 2013

A Special Cover was released to mark 25 years of excellence of Apeejay School, Saket, New Delhi on 8th May 2013. Apeejay School, Saket is situated on the Gurudwara Road of J-Block in Saket, New Delhi, in the midst of a posh and lush green residential area. The foundation stone of the school was laid by Dr. Stya Paul, Chairman, Apeejay Education Society, on March 19, 1988. The school became functional in the same year. It is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi.

Special Cover released in honour of K. P. Kittappa Pillai - 05th May 2013

A Special Cover in honour of K.P. Kittappa Pillai, descendent of Thanjavur quartet, musician, and bharatanatyam guru, was released as a part of his birth centenary celebrations on 5th May 2013 at Thanjavur. Mr. Mervin Alexander, Postmaster General, Central Region, Tiruchi, released the special cover.

K. P. Kittappa Pillai was the son of Sangita Kalanidhi Sri K. Ponniah Pillai, a scion of the famous Tanjore Quartet, codifiers of the Bharatanatyam format. K. P. Kittappa Pillai began his career as a vocalist having been trained by his own father Sri Ponniah Pillai and flourished in that sphere for some time. As a direct disciple of his maternal grandfather, the veteran Nattuvanar Pandanallur Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, Kittappa Pillai established himself as a versatile Nattuvanar during the major part of his career. Kittappa Pillai himself was a brilliant musician, teacher and choreographer and revived many rare pieces of the original Tanjavur repertoire, producing the first annotated versions in the 1950s, including the Sarabhendra Bhupala Kuravanji and the Navasandhi Kavituvams. He trained several students in India and from abroad, some of whom became prominent performers of the Thanjavur tradition.

The Vice President, Shri Mohd. Hamid Ansari released a Special Cover on ICED, at the inauguration of the International Centre for Environment Audit & Sustainable Development, in Jaipur, Rajasthan on May 04, 2013. The Governor of Rajasthan, Smt. Margaret Alva and the Comptroller and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Shri Vinod Rai are also seen in the photograph. The objectives of this center are Capacity building through training, knowledge dissemination and sharing, to be a Centre for Environment Policy Research and to offer professional certification on Environmental studies.

Commemorative Stamp on 100 years of Indian Cinema - 3rd May 2013.

President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee released commemorative postage stamps of 50 iconic personalities of Indian Cinema to commemorate 100 years of Indian Cinema on 3rd May 2013 at the function held at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to commemorate the century long journey of Indian Cinema. Speaking on the occasion, Minister for IT & Communications Sh.Kapil Sibal said, Department of Posts had given a fitting tribute to the powerful medium called Cinema by issuing 50 new stamps, a biggest release ever.

Following film personalities are depicted on the stamps released by the President:

M/S No. 1: Ashok Kumar, Bhalji Pendharkar, Dhirendranath Ganguly, B. N. Sirkar, Bhupen Hazarika, Durga Khote, B. R. Chopra, Dev Anand and Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

M/S No. 2: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Naushad, Nitin Bose, Prithviraj Kapoor, Raichand Boral, Ruby Myers, Sohrab Modi, Tapan Sinha and Yash Chopra.

These stamps will be made available for sale to all Philatelic Bureaux in the month of June 2013. First two Miniature Sheets consist of nine stamps each and depicts some Dadasaheb Phalke awardees. The other four with eight stamps each depict personalities from various fields of cinema. The denomination of each Stamp is Rs. 5/-. Single stamp sheets are not being issued/ printed. India Post has revised Tariff / Postage Rates for International EMS (International Speed Post) with effect from 01/05/2013.

Special Cover released on International Labour Day - 1st May 2013

A Special Cover on International Labour Day was released by the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, Shri Jayant Kumar Banthia in Mumbai on 1st May 2013. The Postal Department also honoured Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) and Gramin Dak Sevaks on the occasion of International Labour Day. Maharashtra Circle has a network of 12,600 Post Offices with the staff of 48,639 to run the Postal Services in the Circle. The special cover was dedicated to the 4,497 MTS and 20,000 odd Gramin Dak Sevaks who work day in and day out for the department in all nooks and corners of the State. The Chief Post Master General of Maharashtra Circle, Shri K.C. Mishra, VSM and Post Master General Mail Management, Shri H. Agrawal were also present on the occasion.

Special Covers on International Labour Day were also released at Panaji (Goa), Pune and Nagpur on 1st May 2013.
